. The Logos in relation to man (Part 1)

John 1:1-4 (ESV) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.”

This morning we continue our series on the Glory of the Logos and we will specifically be looking at verse 4: “In him was life, and the life was the light of men.” As we continue in this series I stand more and more in awe of the glory of the Son of God. Remember that John is writing to convince man of who Jesus Christ is. John 20:31 (ESV) 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” John is writing for a verdict, but he is also writing for victory. John does not only write so that we will believe, but also that we will have life in His name. There are too many believers packing our churches who have come to faith in Christ, but they have no life in Christ. That is the very purpose for which Christ came. John 10:10 (ESV) 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Therefore he tells us that Jesus is the eternal Logos, the eternal Word, the one who makes God known. He is the one who exegeted God. So far we have looked at the Logos in relation to time from verse 1. Before time, before anything was made Jesus the Logos was there. We looked at the Logos in relation to God from verse 1 & 2. The Logos was with God and the Logos was God. We saw that God is three, but also that God is one. Jesus is the second person of the Triune Godhead and He has His own person and work, but He is as much God as the Father and the Spirit are God. We also looked at the Logos in relation to creation from verse 3. Everything that has ever come into existence came into existence through Him. When you look at all of this you see the glory of the one in whom we are to believe.

So, okay, the Logos has always been, the Logos is God, the Logos made everything, but what does all of this have to do with me. Here I am, living on earth, does it really matter if we know where earth came from, and does it really matter if there is a God? Can I not just get on with life and enjoy it for the few years that I am alive? Who  really cares if there is a God?

Well, this morning we see something else about the glory of God that will answer these questions. Look at verse 4 again:4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.” So if this verse is true, it does matter if you believe if there is a God or not, and it does matter if He is the one who made you and everything that is around you.

We now look at the Logos in relation to mankind.

There are two things we learn here from verse 4, namely that Jesus is the life of men and that Jesus is the light of men. Now when I talk about life, I can talk about the biological life that we enjoy, the spiritual life that we enjoy as well as eternal life. That will give me a nice three point sermon. But in contrast to the common word used for ‘Life’ which is ‘bios’ in the Greek which refers to physical life, John here uses the word  zoe {dzo-ay'} which refers to Spiritual life.

In this sermon which I will preach over two parts I want to show you how the Logos is the life of men and the light of men in three ways.

1. The Logos is the life and light of men from the perspective of creation.

1.1 The life of men from the perspective of creation.

We spent exciting times together thinking about creation for a few weeks. Now we cut deeper and we think in terms of mankind and creation. The only reason we live or have life is because He created us. God always derives His life from within Himself, but man derives his life from outside himself. The very fact that you have a human race is because of the Son of God. In John 14:6 (ESV) we see that Jesus Himself said: 6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Not only is it true that all men came into being through the Son of God, and in that sense He is our life, but all men continue to exist because of the Son of God. All things right now in this universe are being upheld by the power of the Son of God. All of us right now owe our life and our breath, our thoughts our very existence to Him. It’s all because of the power of the Son of God. Think about it. All men right now Christians and non-Christians are upheld by the very one in whom the vast majority refuse to believe. They even hate the very thought of Him and would rather believe in some chance event 13.7 billion years ago than in the revealed Son of God. The very one whom they recognize in their calendars is the one who holds man together but they refuse to believe in Him. It is like hating, disbelieving and slandering the very one who pays your salary every month.

Many people believe there is a God, but they will not believe in Jesus or that God had the right to reveal Himself in such a way. Some others even believe that they are right with God but they refuse to trust in His Son. The Bible is very clear that if you deny the Son you deny God. Look at 1 John 2:23 (ESV) “23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.” You have dishonoured God when you refuse to believe His testimony about the Son. Hebrews 1:3 (ESV) 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” He upholds all things, that is; the universe, mankind and all other things by the Word of His power.

So it is the Son of God whom men dishonour that is the very one who gives men life and breath. Think about what holy restraint the Son of God demonstrates at this very hour. He can take those men out of existence. He can destroy them in a moment. They are in His hand. I remember that as a little boy I loved playing with toy soldiers. I could manipulate them as I wanted, determine where they will be on the battle field, I could kill them, burry them, burn them. They had absolutely no authority or power over me or resistance against me. That is exactly what man is in the hands of God. He can do with us what He wants to.

The fact that He does not just wipe out mankind is nothing but grace. They deny Him, they hate Him, they despise Him, they persecute His people, and they speak evil of His truth. They say that Jesus of Nazareth is not God in human flesh yet He holds them in His hand and gives them their very existence. What Holy and gracious restraint He demonstrates that He would keep them out of hell for one more moment? The only reason men walk on this earth right now and do not drop immediately into hell is because of the very ONE whom they curse. So from the perspective of existence He is the life of men. All things came into existence by Him and all things at this very moment are upheld by the power of His word.

1.2  The Light of men from the perspective of creation.

Why is it that man is so different from animals? Why is it that man has such a diverse ability to create and be creative? Why is it that we have an ability to think that is distinct from animals? Why is it that we have a consciousness of God? Why is it that we have a capacity to worship? Why is there a light in mankind that is not found in animals? It is all because of Jesus. Jesus as the intermediate agent of creation was responsible for that light which men have naturally and animals don’t. I deplore it when I am continually reminded that we are just mammals, no my friend, we are fearfully and wonderfully made and that according to His image.

We have the light and life of God and they go together. God’s ‘life’ is true and Holy, ‘Light’ is the manifestation of that truth and holiness. So they go hand in hand. This concept is clearly seen in Psalm 36:9 (ESV)9 For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.” Even though that natural light has now been marred by sin, the reason why mankind right now is different from animals is because of Jesus as the intermediate agent of creation. Man instinctively knows that God is, that God is powerful, that God is wise, that God is a judge. Men instinctively know and fear. This is why they fear death. This is why mankind does not want to talk about death or deal honestly with the whole issue of death. It is because they know that there is a judge and they know that they are sinful.

The question is, where did this light come from, that reveals to man that all that has been made speaks of God, and that He is bigger than what we are, more powerful than we are, and that we are ultimately accountable to Him? It came from Jesus, it came from God. Let me put it in another way. Why at this moment do you believe and your neighbour who is quite an intelligent person does not. Let me read you some critical verses that deal with the light of men from the perspective of creation. 2 Corinthians 4:4-6 (ESV) 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

John Calvin who lived many, many years ago wrote the following: “the light which was originally bestowed on men must not be estimated by their present condition because in this corrupted and degenerate nature light has been turned into darkness. And yet the light of understanding is not wholly extinguished for amidst the thick darkness of the human mind some remaining sparks of the brightness still shine”. So as the author of that original light which was in man, Christ himself is now the author of that light which can allow a man’s mind to really see what a person must see to be saved.

If a man has any light of intelligence, any light of consciousness it comes from the Son of God. It is only the Son of God that can lift the darkness that now envelopes man. It is only He that lifts the veil and gives the understanding man needs to be saved. Where did the light come from if a man understands that he is lost, if a man understands that he is a sinner, if a man understands who God is as He is presented in Scripture? Where did the light come from if a man understands that Jesus is the only way to be reconciled to God, and that Jesus died on the cross to pay for all the sins of those who have trusted in Him? Where did the light come from if a man is able to see that Jesus was raised from the dead and is able to save to the uttermost all those who put their faith in Him? Where did the light come from if a man sees so that He repents of His sin and trusts in the Son of God, how did he come to see, where did the light come from? It came from Jesus.

Jesus is the author of that light. A good example of that is found in Luke 24:36-45 (ESV) when Jesus appeared to His disciples after His resurrection. They were startled and frightened and doubted, they thought they were seeing a ghost. He showed them His hands and feet, they touched Him, He ate broiled fish before them, and then He said: 44 “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,” Who opened their minds? It was the Son of God who gave them understanding. The author of that original light which was in man though it is now marred by sin is the very one who can take the scales off our eyes so that we can behold the truth that sets us free. He is the very one who now gives light unto Salvation. He is the one who opens the mind so that a man in darkness can understand all of a sudden.

Is it not a frightening thought that men curse and despise the very one that can lift the veil and unchain them from their darkness? John Calvin again on this section says it so beautifully: “As it is not in vain that God imparts His light to their minds, it follows that the purpose for which they were created was that they might acknowledge Him, who is the author of so excellent a blessing, and since this light from which the Word was the source has been conveyed from Him to us it ought to serve as a mirror in which we may clearly behold the divine power of the Word. We must acknowledge Him who is the author of the light which we receive and the reason why Jesus gives the light that He gives us is that we may clearly behold the divine power that is found in the one who gives us the light.”

Oh that we may behold the glory of God in the light that He gives us. There is one thing atheists and evolutionists acknowledge that they do not know, and that is where life comes from? This morning, you and I know, we know that Creator God was the one who gave us life, and He is the one who gave us the necessary light so that we can understand that there is no life outside Jesus Christ.
