Junk status or not?

http://www.fastmoving.co.za/img/newslinks/8487_sa-almost-certain-to-face-junk-status-by-end-of-year-analyst/sa_almost_certain_to_face_junk_status_by_end_of_year_analyst_link.jpgWe are living in a very troubled world, and as Christians we cannot escape the negativity. It is in our newspapers, on TV, people Facebook and Twitter one another about it. Wherever you go it is fears, tensions and a sense of futility that prevails. Today there was an announcement whether our currency will be downgraded to junk status or not by the Standard & Poor’s (S&P) ratings agency. All this on the back of crime that is out of control, politics that is out of control and the amount of violence that envelops our society. Well, we avoided Junk Status, but the economic concerns remain.

What can we do about all of the above? As Christians, we know the answer to the world’s problems. If only they will believe us that if everybody loves God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength and their neigbours in the same way they love themselves, then so much will fall into place. Sure we are not perfect, and never will be this side of the grave, but we know that Christ is the answer for the world today, and above Him there is no other, Jesus is the only way.

The question is very simple, “why does the world not believe what we have to say”. Now sure, there are theological answers regarding redemption. We know that salvation is a work from above by the rebirthing of a dead and damned man by the Spirit of God. And we do know that when a man like that is born again, then he is able to say that he is a new creation and that everything is new. He will then and then only be able to view this world through Biblical eyes and through the eyes of Christ. But more than theological – why does the world not believe us?

I believe part of the problem is that so many Christians live and act as if they do not believe it themselves. In a sense we have downgraded ourselves to spiritual Junk Status, and declared poverty in Christ instead of fullness. Paul writes in Colossians 2:6-10 (ESV) 6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.”

Christian, do not allow yourself to be taken captive by the principles of this world. Remain a captive of Christ, for in Him dwells the fullness of deity bodily, and you have been filled with Him who supersedes the politics of this world, who supersedes the governments of this world, who supersedes the economy of this world. He is the great and the final head of all rule and authority, and He did not save you to dump you into Junk Status. Do not put yourself there. He saved you from the guttermost to the uttermost, and He makes no junk. He made us a little lower than the angels and not a little higher than the apes. He created us in His image. Yes, we have fallen, but in Christ we are a new creation, we are a Priesthood of believers to declare the praises of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. It is Christ in us, the hope of glory. We are not hopeless junk; we are those who are seated with Him in the heavenlies. And according to Ephesians 3:10-12 (ESV) 10 it is through the church that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.”

So whatever happens in this dear country of ours, Christian – lift up your head, your final redemption is drawing nigh, but in the meantime: 1 …since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

At the end of the day, in spite of what this world will throw at you, you need to say, that it is well with your soul in spite of anything else.
