8 Although I am less than the least of all God’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Ephesians 3:8-11, NIV)

This text is one of the most glorious texts as far as the eternal purpose of the church in Christ is concerned and it should fill us all with awe as we consider our place in the church. Now, we can look at the text in two ways. One way is to approach it in its logical order, or the other way is to agree with John Piper when he said that the best place to start is with our glorious, holy, omnipotent, sovereign God and to end with man.

What is this text all about? In a nutshell, from verse 8-11 you will see that God through His grace uses ordinary people like Paul, and people like you and I to proclaim the unsearchable riches of Christ, so that the glorious church of Jesus Christ can be gathered from all nations to fulfil God’s eternal purpose, which is to display His manifold wisdom to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realm. This section is one of many in Scripture that remind me of a tapestry. When you look at the underside or back end of the tapestry the chords seem to go into all directions, colours are mottled and blotchy, there seems to be chaos, no clear picture emerges, but when you turn the tapestry around you see the clear picture of what all those strands of string meant to be. When we look at life we realise that the back of the tapestry is always our side. Many times nothing seems to make sense, but praise God, that there is a front end or upper side which is God’s side, and when you see life from His perspective, it always makes sense doesn’t it?  Think of Job’s life. Surely from his perspective it will look like the back end of a tapestry. Nothing seems to make sense, but for Job and all of us we need to rest in confidence that the final picture, the glorious picture is known to God.

Life for us is often like viewing a puzzle, and seeing thousands of pieces, but we do not have the box with the picture, only God does. So together we have to build and make pieces fit and only on that day when we stand in glory we will see the final picture as God saw it from the beginning. Let’s look at this tapestry together, starting at the front end from verse 10-11.
