. Is God woke?

This is maybe one of the most radical sermons I can share in a time like this. For today I am not going to do full Biblical justice, and I do not want to let it sound like a political speech, but what I am going to share is critical. I recognise that I need hours to do justice to this topic. I wanted to show video after video to help you understand, but time will not allow.

For some of you it is going to be surprising as you might not be aware of what is going on – on the world stage, but for all of us it should be a wake-up call for what is going on in this world, and I believe this is all setting a new World Stage and a New Church stage that is destroying the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ on the back of a socialist, communistic agenda. There is a left-wing socialist Marxist movement that hates God and hates the church, and they are gaining massive ground around the world. Believe it or not they are stirring in South Africa as well. All of this is done under the guise of a caring social agenda. The world and many churches are moving to a point where sin is no longer sin, but seeking the truth is sin. Truth will be legislated against, and sin will be legislated for. There is a strong move for governments to control your mind, and your speech, and it starts with indoctrinating our children by pre-school teachers, schoolteachers and university and college professors who spread ideology rather than sticking to their academic subjects.

The term WOKE is presently dominating the world stage, and especially in liberal countries like America, England, Canada, and many other European countries. It is starting to light the fires in Australia, New Zealand and guess what, even in South Africa. Helen Zille has just written a book about it. We need to take note of it and ask what the Word of God says about it. The term ‘woke’ has found its way into mainstream vocabulary; however, many are still unfamiliar or unsure about the meaning behind the word.

The old meaning of the word defines woke as simply the “past simple of wake”, as in to wake up, or awake.

Let me define WOKE as per Wikipedia. “Woke is a term, originating in the United States, that originally referred to awareness about racial prejudice and discrimination. It subsequently came to encompass an awareness of other issues of social inequality, for instance, regarding gender and sexual orientation.”

Now everything has been added. The Woke crowd hates police, the poor must have the right to steal. In America the woke left are defunding police, and crime has shot through the roof. Incarceration is frowned upon as racial prejudice, and judges are working like fishermen, it is catch and release.  In San Francisco you can steal up to $900 without being incarcerated. It is simply a misdemeanour. The mindset of Woke is that when a crime is being permitted, counsellors/psychologists need to go to the crime scene and not police with guns. Abortion on demand is rife in the USA and in South Africa. Many states in the USA have allowed for abortion to take place in the trimester period, but now some states are calling for abortion to be allowed at birth, as long as not more than one third of the baby has appeared the mother has the right at that time to still say, ‘kill the baby’.  Texas has just become the most unpopular state in the USA for deciding two days ago, that as soon as the heart beats, you cannot have abortion on demand, it must be justified. The pro-abortionists have acknowledged that there goes 85% of the abortions. For them it flies against the ideology of “my body, my choice”. The child has no choice.

The woke culture has become dominant in political spheres where parental guidance is replaced by governmental guidance, where parents lose their right to state the gender of their child, until the child one day tells them whether he is a boy or a girl. The LGBTQIA+ movement has now started dominating the woke agenda. It was always LGBT but the list is growing. The acronym stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual. They have now added Pansexual, where a person might opt to have sexual relationships with any of the above, based on a matter of choice. They are a minute percentage of the population, but it is as if the fibre of America is dependent on their place in all walks of society. Their rights are supreme in South Africa as well. There is a call now for Paedophilia to be added. Not sure that it will happen. In my view Bestiality will be next. They are already squeaking at what is worse, whether to murder and animal and to eat it, or to make love to it.

The speaker of the house in America, Nancy Pelosi has ordered that no person may be addressed based on their gender. You are no longer father or mother. Mother is simply the birthing parent; breastfeeding is chest feeding. A young boy or girl at school stating that they are boys or girls based on biological features are discriminating against those with the same features who feel they are the opposite to their features. So, a doctor can no longer say what they have always said, it is now, ‘birthing parent and other parent, you have been blessed with a child who will one day inform you of their gender.’

Woke got driven into the mainstream by Black Lives Matter through an agenda to highlight White Supremist attitudes. You can be as non-racist as can be, but the BLM agenda which has made a major ground swell, a political ground swell, a militant groundswell, will state that all whites are absolutely racist an no black person can ever be racist. This has crept into the schools and children are being set up against one another based on race. Even children in a black/white marriage are being set up against one another and against their parents or adoptive parents based on colour. The BLM movement does not exist because black lives really matter for them, but to fit with a leftist socialistic agenda to control the masses on the back of sympathy for others. It is absolutely true that Black lives matter, as do all lives matter.

Born out of that. CRT theory (Critical Race Theory) holds that every society is divided into two absolute and unbridgeable, racially determined, groups. The first is black: its members are permanently disadvantaged victims of a society which is set up to enforce black poverty and underdevelopment. The second is white: its members are permanently privileged and perpetrate various crimes against the black group to secure their unearned privilege and maintain black poverty. They claim that CRT must unite people, but the whole agenda is divisive.

The inversion of the meaning of language and the adoption of ‘equity’ to mean the achievement of the equality of outcomes, point to a theory that, although it has ‘social justice’ as its aim, is just political indoctrination towards socialism. What we associate with ‘wokeness’ and ‘political correctness’ is suffused into the application of CRT. CRT is alive in our schools and particularly in the education system of the USA. Its ultimate aim is to overthrow capitalism to create a Marxist state. It has become the right of governments and no longer parents to teach or indoctrinate our children with ideology and to determine their response to the world we live in.

Birthed out of the Woke movement is “cancel culture”, which means that if you oppose any of the above, you can lose your work, your kids can be put out of school, the large social networks like Facebook and Whatsapp, Twitter, and You tube can remove your right to speak and to be heard. For example, something huge in America is where men (Transvestites) for the sake of athletics and other sports suddenly define themselves as women and compete against women, share their showers, and beat them on the field. Any resistance against this causes the cancel culture to kick in. If you do not think like them, if you do not think Woke, you are cancelled. Think of the ramifications for the church.

Now what has this got to do with us as Christians? Well, it is starting to creep into churches around the world who are going WOKE and causing division and creating a new social church culture. I believe that it is preparing us for a New World Order, where government will control what you think, do, and speak. They will do this with churches as well. They are simply using social issues as a means to an end. There are already acts on the table in South Africa that seek to control churches. Let me give you one simple illustration.

Go and type the following sentence in Microsoft Word: “Those without Christ are damned” – You will see that the word damned will be underlined in blue. If you click on the word Microsoft says the following to you. “This language may be offensive to your readers.”

Personally, I will not be surprised if we are now, more than ever being prepared for the rule of an Antichrist. Covid 19, maybe unintended has given power hungry politicians the opportunity to control the masses. It is interesting that the CDC (Centre for disease control) in America has defined racism as an illness as bad as Covid 19, and that they should be allowed to address it on the same level as what Covid is managed.

At Logos, we must not be ignorant as to where this is going, and we need to make sure that our approach to these issues is Biblical. Next week I will guide you where Scripture leads us to, as the church should be concerned about social issues. We need to be leaders, but under Christ, with a Biblical mandate, and answers born from the heart of God. The Word of God either directly or indirectly addresses all the issues and we must be Bible Driven, and not Politically driven. God has never tried to be politically correct.

The main issue however goes right back to the Garden of Eden. Satan’s words to Eve were – “Did God really say, but I say to you?”

Genesis 3:1-4 (ESV) 1 Now the serpent was more crafty (same word for naked/exposed) than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

What does God say about all of this? We need to get back to the throne as Isaiah did in Isaiah 6:1-6 (ESV) “1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” 4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

I preached a sermon on this recently and am not going to say much on the text. What we do need to take note of is that we need to get back to the throne and see God for who He is and see man for who we are. He is Holy, the train of His robe fills the temple, He is served by great angels, He is the Lord of hosts and the whole earth is filled with His glory. His standards, His authority, His methods, His decrees should be nothing but our joy, but alas Isaiah say, I am a man of unclean lips, and dwell in the midst of people of unclean lips.

The speech in this world has never been more unclean than it is now, from the stage of our world and national leaders, from the stage of our politicians, form the stage of companies, government departments. It all shouts anti God, anti-norms, anti-truth, anti-family values. The speech seeks to divide along racial lines.

In the USA a group was born that was responsible for major riots, looting and hatred called Antifa which is supposed to be anti-fascists. They regard it as their right to act violently towards you based on your opposing thoughts and speech. They are anti police, but they see it as their right to punish anybody who goes against their woke agenda. Your speech in disagreement with the Woke agenda is regarded as violent and can therefore be met with violence. They will punish you for your thought. It is rife in Hollywood, it has become rife in the workplace. If you don’t speak woke, you can lose your job, if a company does not speak woke, they get cancelled by culture and shut you down, if your kids at school don’t speak woke, they will see it in their marks, if teachers don’t speak woke, they will lose their jobs. If you don’t speak woke you simply get cancelled. Your right to free speech, and free thought gets cancelled by Big Tech – FB, Whatsapp, Twitter, You Tube etc. Anybody who propagated that the Covid virus came from a lab in Wuhan in China, were cut off, and yet it seems that it is true. What they do not cancel is accounts of people like the Taliban in Afghanistan and other prominent terrorists in the world.

In this world the ploy of Satan is seen in Isaiah 5:20 (ESV) 20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” This is done through indoctrination. We now have what we call generation Z and it is this generation that is bombarded with a thought pattern, where they question family values, Christian values, the authority of Scripture, and it is replace with free thought, which is not really free, it is nothing more than a social construct manipulated through indoctrination. A pure heart is no longer what Scripture teaches, but what man feels, and what man feels is the product of what society tells you to feel.

This leads to one new critical movement in the world called the ‘GREAT RESET’. The Covid pandemic has provided the opportunity to reboot, reset, a new world order.

The Great Reset is an attempt to seize the moment of the COVID-19 crisis to build a better society, where “better” means three things: greener, more digital, and fairer. It is driven by a feeling that the financial crisis of the late 2000s was a missed opportunity: trillions of dollars were handed out in stimulus packages, but nothing really changed, and no measures were taken to stop it all happening again.

Who started this? The Great Reset is the brainchild of Professor Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum (WEF) that gathers many of the world’s political and corporate leaders for a summit each January in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. The gathering typically attracts corporate luminaries such as Bill Gates and the heads of Coca-Cola, Goldman Sachs, and IBM, who can be seen rubbing shoulders with Presidents and Prime Ministers, and celebrities such as Bono and the Prince of Wales.

Behind the glitz, the WEF has a clear agenda for social change. Alongside co-author Thierry Malleret, Schwab argues in his recently published book COVID-19: The Great Reset for “stakeholder capitalism”, the idea that capitalism should not just benefit shareholders but also employees, consumers, communities and the environment. Schwab writes on the WEF website that: … the world must act jointly and swiftly to revamp all aspects of our societies and economies, from education to social contracts and working conditions. Every country, from the United States to China, must participate, and every industry, from oil and gas to tech, must be transformed. In short, we need a “Great Reset” of capitalism.

The WEF calls for nothing less than “a new social contract cantered on human dignity [and] social justice”. This reset must include the church.

The main criticism is that it represents a socialist, globalist conspiracy for global control and dominance.

To put it mildly, the Great Reset and its parent body the World Economic Forum have caused mixed reactions.

How does the Bible diagonalize this dichotomy? By showing that both sides are peddling reductive simplifications of a complex Christian view of time, society, and humanity. The Great Resetters are not wrong to want to make society better; that is part of the creation mandate, and the church should lead. In Christ we are a new creation. But their trust in centralized authorities and concentrations of power without very clear checks and balances is naïve about the human heart and the consequences of the fall.

Meanwhile, the critics are not wrong to be suspicious of control and concentrated power, but their cynicism stops their ears to the responsibility we all must steward the natural and cultural worlds—a charge we cannot meet unless we work together in some form. In short, both the optimists and pessimists take part of a complex truth and make it the whole: the Great Resetters underplay the fall, and the critics underplay the creation mandate; the Great Resetters have an over-realised secular eschatology, while the critics take human greed and sinfulness as a reason not to work for the peace and prosperity of the cities in which we find ourselves.

By contrast, Christians who want to offer a full-orbed biblical response should give full weight, in biblical proportion, to creation, fall, redemption and consummation, to human potential and to human perversity.

I want to end today with the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 (ESV) “18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” 20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”
