WORDS OF WISDOM FOR 2019 ELECTION

Introduction.

The 8th of May which is this coming Wednesday will see the next national election. 48 Parties will be contesting this election, and we cannot blame anybody who is confused with regards to the voting procedure and choices.

The last thing I am going to do this morning is to tell you who to vote for. I do want to give you principles that will guide you and hopefully provide you with the much-needed wisdom. It is no secret that we live in a country where we have many blessings and many trials. There is so much in this country that I will never exchange for another country, and I have done my fair share of travelling over the years. But it is also true that we are plagued by crime, corruption, murder and every evil practice you can imagine.

On the political front things look no better. When you listen to the promises that political leaders make before the election, you need to remind yourself of the fact that it is mostly nothing but promises. What we do know is that many of our politicians despite their promises to honour the constitution of the country are guilty of corruption. At this moment the Zondo commission is digging up hundreds if not thousands of references to State Capture and corruption. We have seen the hand of politicians in the collapse of the Venda Building Society. Nepotism has been rife. It is all about money and jobs for me and my buddies and family.

Are things going to change?

Well, if you listen to one of South Africa’s leading prophetesses it is going to all become better. Mark sent me a whatsapp that is going around of the words of Prophetess Janet Brann-Hollis which was uttered on the 27th of April. This was posted on the Dr Arthur Frost Prophetic Strategy and you can listen to it on Youtube. Let me read this to you and use this as a springboard to what I really believe God wants us to know.

“The Lord is saying to South Africa, today I am putting you onto a new trajectory. I am going to shock even the world with what I am going to do in this nation in this coming season, says God.

Know that I am shaking even the power bases of the political parties, shaking out the wickedness in these parties, says God, shaking even the spiritual realm, I am shaking the principalities and powers that are controlling these parties in this nation, even at this time, says God.

For the Lord says, where fear has controlled this nation, I am breaking the power of fear over this nation. For this will be a nation going forward where the fear of God is restored to this nation, says the Spirit of the Lord.

The Lord says, know that I am beginning a revival amongst the youth. I am doing a new thing amongst the youth, says God.

And the Lord says, I am restoring this nation to a land of hope and glory – for there will be opportunities for all, says the Spirit of God. Therefore, the Lord says, do not be discouraged this day, but stand up – and in the spirit realm, says God, call forth my plans and my purposes (and) continue to pray, says God.

For the Lord says, I am shaking principalities. I am shaking powers as I raise up a new leadership over South Africa, says God, for I am calling forth the Daniels, I am calling forth the Josephs, those who are hidden in the secret places, I am calling them forth into the light and they shall lead my nation.

And the Lord says, I speak today to one who is called Floyd (Shivambu). Floyd, Floyd, there was a time that you knew me, says the Spirit of God. The Lord says, I challenge you today, my son. I say to you that I will shake you in your bed, says God, and I will call you out of darkness. The Lord says, why are you leading this nation astray? Why are you leading the peoples of this nation astray? I will shake you and you will have an encounter with me, says the Spirit of God. For the Lord says, your name will be changed from Saul to Paul and you will lead my people into light in this nation in the future years, says the Spirit of God. So therefore, hear me, hear me, hear me - I speak to you this day.

So, God says to the church, even this day, rise up and take this land back for me. Rise up and take this nation back. For South Africa will begin to live in harmony, South Africa will begin to live in hope once again, South Africa will be restored, even in the international community and the world once again.

The Lord says, I am setting this nation onto a new trajectory from this day forth, therefore stand up for me and hear my voice, and begin to speak. Declare into the spiritual realm. Prophesy to the (dry) bones, says God, prophesy and declare a new South Africa, declare a new South Africa, for truly Saturday is coming, says the Spirit of the Lord. Amen”

Now in the realm of true prophecy, if God says something, it will happen, and we are in for a good ride.

Well, in a few days’ time and even more in a few months’ time we will be able to tell if this prophecy was true. Oh, how we wish it were to be true. It would be wonderful. Like Jeremiah standing in the presence of Hananiah the false prophet he said ‘Amen, may it be so.’ My opinion based on wisdom and discernment is that I do not believe this is a word from the Lord. This nation has never belonged to God. We cannot take back a land for God that has never belonged to Him. Also, these kinds of prophecies are two for a penny. A while ago there was a prophecy out of America in which a man was dreaming that a Rap star appeared to him, and in the dream, God told him that Mmusi Maimane was going to be the new leader of South Africa. We will wait and see whether this will happen. The polls speak otherwise.

I have often reminded you that in God’s book there are only two kinds of people, namely believers and unbelievers and God has a covenant relationship with believers. Unbelievers minds are hostile towards God and their desires are opposite to what God desires for us.

But then also there are only two kinds of wisdom. There is earthly wisdom and there is Heavenly wisdom. As a believer you are obligated to exercise heavenly wisdom in your own life, but you are also obligated to vote for those who would best apply the principles of heavenly wisdom and the least apply earthly wisdom.

For today we will do a short study on Heavenly Wisdom Vs. Earthly Wisdom and my prayer is that in this sermon God will by His Spirit trigger thoughts in your mind that will help you decide.

James 3:13-18 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.

17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

My premise this morning is that we will be a people who are wise and understanding and that we will elect people who are wise and understanding.

In the Old Testament we are encouraged to seek wisdom. In Proverbs 3:13 we are told: 13 Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding.” In Proverbs 4:7-9 we are told: “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.”

In the New Testament we are exhorted to walk with wisdom. Ephesians 5:15-17 reminds us: 15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

Oh, how we need to learn this lesson as believers, even now as we face the election. Be careful how you walk, be wise in everything, even how you vote, remember that we live in evil days, let us not be fools but understand the will of God for our lives and for this country. I have often said that prophetic words are not going to sort out this country, days of prayer are not going to sort out this country. The hope of South Africa starts with Christians living in righteousness and the continuous evangelization of the lost. The more believers in this country and the more believers in parliament guarantees a changed society.

South Africa is at a political crossroads. The reality of South Africa being at a political crossroads is rendered manifest by this political and economic uncertainty. It is rendered manifest by the laws that are being passed in this country. So much goes against Christian values. Arguably, the crossroads is representative of a critical point when decisions with far-reaching consequences must be made by our new government. You and I through this election play a part in it.

Let’s get back to James and look at the contrasts between Heavenly Wisdom and earthly wisdom.

Point 1. The contrast in their origin or source.

1.1  Earthly wisdom is from below (verse 15)

15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.”

  1. Earthly wisdom is just that. It is earthly, it is based on human wisdom, it is based on worldly standards, it is based on the principalities of the air, it is filled with the nature of Satan, it is foolishness to God. Listen to Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 1:20: 20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.”

Often when I listen to politicians speak, when I watch their behaviour in Parliament, one thing that stands out with many is that their conduct and their speech and their decision-making abilities have as its source earthly wisdom. How often don’t you hear people saying that God must adjust to our day and age.

  1. Earthly wisdom is unspiritual. Some translations say ‘sensual’.

Their wisdom appeals to their senses, their emotions, their personal passions. Normally it is all about what is good and right and benefitting for them, and too many politicians do not consider the people they serve. They make promises for the sake of votes, but do not deliver to anybody else but themselves. The fact that certain decisions feels right also does not make it right.

  1. Earthly wisdom is demonic.

This kind of wisdom possessed by the devil and his angels. It is driven by the father of lies. He is the god of this world and drives unspiritual men with evil desires that are filled with unrighteousness. His aim is destruction.

1.2  Heavenly wisdom is from above.

This we see in verse 17. It is the wisdom of God; it is the wisdom of our creator. He knows what we need and has commanded it in Scripture, that is why He uses the folly of preaching to establish His decrees. But we also know from James 1:5 that this wisdom is found through prayer. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

May we all be in much prayer for this coming election and pray for your leaders.

There is a second issue.

2. The contrast in their nature.

2.1 The nature of earthly wisdom.

What does James teach us of earthly wisdom? I am going to mention it, but we do not have time to unpack it. Mediate on these words and judge our politicians accordingly.

Let’s look at verse 14.

“14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.”

Our lives and the lives of our politicians must not be marked with bitter jealousy and selfish ambition. There is so much hatred in parliament that drives agendas and behaviour. Racism is rife in hearts even when legally unspoken. Vendettas based on past or present occupies minds. There is jealousy based on what people have and their position. Where there is jealousy and selfish ambition truth does not reign. We will call good evil and evil good, simply for the sake of a position. Truth does not matter. This is often sadly seen in party politics. The opposition is always wrong even when they are right, and this is driven by jealousy and selfishness. This kind of wisdom drives power, position, privilege and prestige. Somebody once remarked that the only ‘mints’ that many politicians eat is ‘entitlemints’. This is based on selfishness. It is all about me, me first.

2.2 The Nature of heavenly wisdom.

17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

The words in this verse speaks for themselves. But sadly, there is very little of this to be seen in the political playing fields today. How much purity do we see, how much peace do we see? There is strife and division even in political parties. Only those who have heavenly wisdom know the peace of God and are peacemakers and therefore called sons of God.

Gentleness is always produced by Godly wisdom.

Those with Godly wisdom are open to reason. It is so sad when we watch politicians whose brains are in neutral while their mouths are in gear. This can be illustrated with hundreds of examples. Allow me to give one. “Load shedding is good, it shows we are successful because it shows we are giving power to more people.” We all know that this is not the cause of load shedding.

‘Full of mercy’ speaks about our attitudes towards others. Wise people always err on the side of mercy.

I do not think that ‘good fruits’ in the text refers to the fruit of the Spirit, but that it refers to outcome, achievements, productivity and results that are good, positive and beneficial to all people.

I spoke about this before, but would it not be wonderful if we had politicians who are “impartial and sincere”. It is fine to have opposition parties, but the marks of a heavenly wise person is that I will agree with my enemy if they are right, and I will do it in a sincere fashion. It is sad when we or our politicians disrespect people based on skin colour, political partisanship or opposing views. We should always have engaging minds and open to reason, and not just shoot others down because they differ with me.

3. The contrast in their fruits.

3.1 The fruit of earthly wisdom.

“16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”

We already saw that jealousy and selfish ambition are the nature of earthly wisdom. But what does it produce?

It produces disorder or confusion, and it produces every evil thing. I have often said that democracy in our country and even many times in our churches is ‘democrazy.’ Look at the disorder in our democracy. You see it when everybody is shouting ‘on a point of order’ while their ‘point of order’ is actually disorderly and out of order. It is simply because earthly wisdom reigns. It has nothing to do with the good of society but is driven by selfish ambition.

Earthly wisdom also produces vile or evil practices. State capture is evil, corruption is evil, robbing the poor is evil, laziness is evil, lying is evil, violence is evil, deceit is evil. There is so much evil in our society. Sadly, much of it is about as we are not sufficiently the light and salt to the world that we ought to be.

3.2 The fruit of heavenly wisdom.

18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

It is very simple. The fruit is absolute ‘righteousness’ which is sown in peace by those who make peace. We are not a society at peace. We do not have a parliament that is at peace. So much of what happens in our country is filled with unrighteousness.

Conclusion

We don’t have time to summarise. What I do want to do is to read another section of Scripture that I believe correlates with what we have just looked at. Take it to heart, apply it, so that it may go well with us as we live as people pleasing God.

Paul tells Titus in chapter 3 to remind the people under his care of the following and this I want to do in closing. “Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, 2 to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. 3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Saviour appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 8 The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. 9 But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. 10 As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.”

Amen!
